Dave & Mary Alper JCC, Lisa Ann Watson Children's Museum presents: From Home to Home: Jewish Immigration to America

Presented from January 3 – April 3, 2016

From Home to Home: Jewish Immigration to America is for every family of every culture. Parents, children and grandchildren are sure to love this amazing exhibit, on loan from the Jewish Museum of Florida. From Home to Home will inspire visitors of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about their own family origins. Fun-filled and educationally rich, it will serve as a valuable tool for encouraging discussions at home and in classrooms of how we are all more alike than different, to help dispel stereotyping and bigotry and foster mutual appreciation.

Because Florida is a state of immigrants with more than 155 ethnic groups represented in local schools, nearly everyone's family, in some generation, has experienced moving to a new country.  From Home to Home: Jewish  Immigration to America is specially designed for children ages 6 to 12 and allows them and their families to experience the process of moving to a new home. It will encourage family discussions of arriving in America and the hopes and dreams that brought them here.
From Home to Home has 29 colorful modules with hands-on activities. Children will:
Use visual arts as a means to connect with some of the many ethnic groups in  Florida by creating art that mimics, in style, technique and materials, original arts and crafts that emanate from and symbolize various cultures and countries
·       Using a real scale to weigh tangible arguments for staying in or leaving home.
·       Participating in a family conversation in Germany in the wake of the Nuremberg Laws of the 1930s
·       Deciding which items are truly important to take and packing them into a small trunk. What is important to bring? What can one leave?
·       Shopping in a supermarket where everything is in a foreign language
·       Trying to fit a family of 10 into a small apartment
·       Finding their way to school
·       Building a neighborhood and deciding on the character of a community through the democratic process
·       "Americanizing" products brought from their countries of origin
From Home to Home explores issues related to relocating to a new land, such as leaving behind the familiarity of neighborhoods, schools, friends, food and language. The exhibit uses the Jewish immigration experience as an example of the acculturation process of people from all backgrounds and cultures, exploring the similarities and challenges people face. From Home to Home's interactive activity stations helps children explore many themes: Why Move? Where to Go? What to Take? New Beginnings; Helping Each Other; Change and Influence; Creative Expression.

800-810 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach

Portable Editions Vol. 1 is a curated, movable installation and exhibition space that showcases limited editions and one-of-a-kind artworks by ArtCenter/South Florida resident artists and alumni. This project creates an exhibition space outside the traditional gallery model and actively engages questions about art and commerce from a conceptual, informal, paired down, and portable space. Architect and artist Louisa Van Leer has designed the mobile installation, an initiative of Remarkable Projects, an artistic collaboration between Juana Meneses and Leila A. Leder Kremer.
Juan López, The Logic-The Moment Between Walls by Juan López
Saturday, December 7 | 9 am - 12 pm
VIP Breakfast Reception (by invitation)
In partnership with Acción Cultural Española and Bass Museum of Art
On view through January 12, 2014
ArtCenter's Richard Shack Gallery |
800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach

Juan López's work explores the aesthetic possibilities of the urban environment, playing with spaces, mixing video projections and installations, designing complex iconic buildings and changing the perception of the architecture. In Between Walls, he introduces the pedestrian mall into the gallery in one piece while exposing the exhibition and its visitors through another. By extending drawing onto the gallery's architecture, López manipulates the interior of the space. These interventions that modify the established could be considered a form of poetic resistance.

ArtCenter's Studio Crawl, held every first Saturday of the month, invites visitors to wander throughout the ArtCenter's three buildings, exchange with our artists in their studios and view our current exhibitions. Portable Editions Vol. 1: Art Locavore exhibits the process of the work of artistic team Juana Meneses and Leila Leder Kremer, known as Remarkable Projects, in collaboration with artist/architect Louisa Van Leer. The exhibition portrays the conception, investigation and prototyping of the nomadic installation that will be on view at ArtCenter/South Florida and different locations throughout Art Basel in Miami Beach. The final installation utilizes the humble work bike, which is used all over the world by small enterprising businesses to move goods on a local/community level. It embodies the DIY / locavore ethos of the project to collaborate with local artists and to work with reusable materials.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida Continues to Celebrate the Favorite Holiday Tradition: The Nutcracker

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida Continues to Celebrate the Favorite Holiday Tradition: The Nutcracker
December 8 - 22, 2013
Photos by JoeyG photography
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will, once again embark on a journey to the Land of the Sweets, as they perform the traditional annual audience favorite, The Nutcracker. This is the most popular holiday story ever performed in the US. It tells the tale of a young girl, Clara, on Christmas Eve and the adventure she undertakes when her most cherished Christmas present, a nutcracker, comes to life. Together they battle the Mouse King, meet the Queen of Snow and travel to the Land of Sweets, where they encounter the always classic, Sugarplum Fairy.
Company members of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida are getting ready to this year's performances of The Nutcracker and are proud to give life to the roles of the Sugarplum Fairy and her cavalier, the Nutcracker Prince, the Marzipan dance, the Snow Queen and all the wonderful characters that light up the eyes of all ages of South Florida audiences during the holiday season.
Vladimir Issaev's holiday tradition will be presented in three magnificent venues: the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and The Parker Playhouse of Fort Lauderdale.
Issaev's engaging choreography preserves the Russian tradition, with music of P.I. Tchaikovsky, yet serves as an alternative to those who already have seen Balanchine's version. Every year the production is enhanced, adding special effects like falling snow and a growing Christmas tree, which enchant children and adults, making each year a new experience for returning audiences.
The principal roles in The Nutcracker will be commanded by Arts Ballet's own delightful international treats - Jun Tanabe, Kaori Fukui, Yukina Yasuhara, Moka Maihara, Hirohito Ikeuchi and Takayuki Asai from Japan, Breeana Flannery from Australia, Lillian Hill of Ft. Lauderdale, Remi Lartigue from France, DeeDee Rosner from North Carolina, Lusian Hernandez from Venezuela, Eileen Pualuan and Hernan Montenegro from Chile with additional dancers from Cuba, Argentina, and Venezuela completing the rest of the cast.
Be Part of the Magic!
The Opening Gala performance takes place at the Fillmore/Gleason, which celebrate the company's sixteen years of making holiday magic. For VIP Patrons, the December 8th Gala will begin at 6:30 pm, with cocktails and hors Hors d'oeuvres, a reception with the international corps of dancers, and chances to bid on silent auction items that range from donations from Tiffany's, to weekend getaways and art pieces, followed by the grand opening performance of the holiday season.
Thanks to our patrons, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida has been bringing affordable and high quality ballet to South Florida!
Engage in the holiday gift loved ones will always cherish. Don't miss the opportunity to share the excitement and charm of the great tradition of the holidays with Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida during their extraordinary performances of The Nutcracker.
